Doctrinal Distinctives
Postmillenialism
In accordance with these standards, Covenant Presbyterian Church holds to biblical postmillennialism as the eschatological system revealed in Scripture. We believe that Jesus Christ is the presently enthroned King of heaven and earth, that he actively rules in history over the kingdom he established by his death and resurrection, and that by the power of his Holy Spirit convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, the nations will be discipled by his gospel prior to his return in victory at the end of history. We reject the notion that Satan rules history and that Christ’s Church will experience progressive defeat in history. The enormous progress the Church has made in the first two thousand years of Christ’s kingdom is but a taste of the greater advances to come as his people trust his promises, presence, and power, uses the divinely-empowered weapons of the preached word and believing prayer, and commits itself to the task of discipling the nations through diligent evangelism.
Theonomy
We also believe that the law of God, summarized in the Ten Commandments and applied through the various case laws of the Old Testament, is the eternal rule of a devout and holy life. While rejecting any aspect of human obedience as the basis of our acceptance with God, for that is accomplished solely through the atoning sacrifice and imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ, we firmly believe and teach that those who are in a saving union with Jesus Christ and, therefore, filled with his Spirit, will experience sanctification of life. The standard of this sanctification is the law of God. We also hold that the law of God is the standard of conduct for man’s social, economic, and political relationships. All men and nations should seek conformity to it as the public expression of their allegiance to Jesus Christ, the King of heaven and earth.
Presuppositional Apologetics
As the Church moves forward in obedience to our Savior’s great commission, we hold to what is commonly called Presuppositional Apologetics as our twofold response to unbelief in the world. Man is intellectually as well as spiritually dead in his trespasses and sins, and, therefore, he is neither neutral toward God nor able to respond to the gospel apart from the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. In confronting unbelief, the believer must give a positive defense of the biblical worldview as well as expose the foolishness of unbelief. We reject the notion that men will be persuaded to embrace the truth through attractive packaging of the gospel message or psychological pressure. His underlying presuppositions about God, the world, and himself must be challenged, demonstrated to be foolish, and changed by the inner working of the Holy Spirit through regeneration.
Head of Household voting
Covenant Presbyterian Church practices Head of Household voting, a church government principle derived from the general principles set forth in our Standards and directly implied by New Testament polity. We believe that Christian women, while having many important roles in the church and home, are not to exercise authority in the Church. Voting is an exercise of authority and should be restricted to the male heads of household. This is not to say that Christian husbands should ignore the desires and wisdom of their wives, but that married couples should express their desires through a unified vote cast by the husband.
